Hi!

What an extraordinary week! Greg and I were commenting a couple of day ago how we feel we've had a proper holiday.  I guess that's what you get when you throw two mums and two kids in a car and tour around England.  It's been so fun and I feel like I've learned SO MUCH.  English history is so interesting.  Greg and I nearly have the lineage of the monarchy sorted.  Although for the life of us we can't figure out why Victoria, the daughter of the 4th son in line to the throne became Queen- were there really no male heirs before her?  What happened to the Y chromosomes in that generation?!

What's more- I think I have eaten chips in every pub outside London and my expert opinion tells me there is great variety in the quality of the humble chip!  (Hopefully my waistline does not reflect that!)

This last week with "MUMS ON TOUR 09" we've been to: Devon- where we visited my old stomping ground, site of my first job in England 14 years ago, Lynmouth; Bath; the Cotswolds; Stratford-upon-Avon (for those of you who know how much of a Shakespeare fan I am, you'll understand how cool that was); Oxford and Henley!

The Mums are worn out and had a day off with some shopping today while I sat here in Starbucks and got this newsletter together for you.

Other exciting things this week- this Saturday is our first "Presentation Secrets" event in London.  It's all sold out. But we still have a few tickets left for next weekend...  Everyone whose attending can sleep rest assured that they will be getting a well holidayed, very focussed Joey this weekend!

And finally last Wednesday I was grateful to have the opportunity to speak at the London "Yes group" which was loads of fun. For those who are receiving their first newsletter from us this week- welcome.  Make sure you check out the blog: www.shiftspeakertraining.com/blog and subscribe to my youtube channel: www.youtube.com/drjoannamartin for more in detail public speaking training.

Cheers,

How far have you come?

Take time reflect on how far you've come in the last period of time - whether its 5, 10 or even 20 years.

It's easy to get stuck in what you are doing and feel like things are moving too slowly for you.

Remember: It takes time for things to become different for you in business or your lifestyle. So take time now to reflect on how far you've come and celebrate the milestones you've achieved!

Own Your Next Speech: Tips on Speaking In Public

Communication is the key to understanding others and a pillar in every aspect of human life. Whether it's for school, for a party, or for your professional life, nothing shows confidence and composure like knowing how to speak in public. No matter how you try to avoid it- even if you don't make a career from it- throughout life, there will be instances where speaking in public is necessary.

To deliver a well-written, beautiful speech is one thing. But to speak with clarity, confidence, and composure requires knowing some helpful speaking tips. Knowing how to tackle public speaking fears and issues can help you become a much more competent speaker and that of course is what we're all about. This will improve your academic, social, and professional life for years to come.

INCREASE YOUR CONFIDENCE

A first step to take when learning to speak well in public is to know how to increase your confidence level.

You can do this by:

  1. Knowing what you are talking about and
  2. Knowing how to deliver what you are talking about.

Knowing your content means more than memorizing words. Do you know what your words mean to your audience? Knowing the true meaning of your content means you understand it well. Knowing the content very well changes the way you deliver the speech. Instead of reciting words, seek to move and inspire your audience.  Then you will become truly memorable.

PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE

The next step to take when improving public speaking is to practice.

Practicing is one of the most important speaking tips because it is something people do not “have time for.” Knowing what you want to say is one thing, but if you do not give yourself the time to fully understand the rhythm, flow, and meaning of your speech, it will be less than extraordinary. Mishaps, awkwardness, and pauses often occur because of a lack of practice. Show your audience that you know what you want to say and that you know how to say it by practicing your next important speech at any moment you can get.

Confidence and practicing are essential and important elements of public speaking. Knowing speaking tips that help boost both of these elements of public speaking can greatly improve the impact that you leave on your audience. Why speak in a way where people will instantly forget you? The point of speaking well in public is to ensure that people listen and that they remember what you say. In your academic, professional, and social lives, speaking well in public can take you very far. It opens the doors of opportunity and success if you take the time to get better at it today.

Opportunity International Australia provides people living in poverty with access to basic financial services – including small loans, savings accounts, insurance and business training. These services are know as microfinance, and they assist people who wouldn’t usually qualify for regular banking services because they have no form of collateral or formal identification.

Here’s how it works…

By helping a mother to buy a sewing machine to start a tailoring business or a father to buy seeds to plant a vegatable garden, small loans enable people in poverty to earn an income and provide for their families. 97% of loans are paid back, so the cycle can continue for years! Each successful business feeds a family, employs more people and eventually helps to empower a whole community.

Did you know that for only a $200 donation you can help one family start a business and employ one other person? This one loan once paid back can be used again and again. Many of us spend more than that on a night out with friends and once that money is gone, it’s gone!
