Sales letters that fill seminars is a BIG subject; too big for this small article. However, I’m going to give you one big tip to take on board that almost guarantees your next event is a sell out. And look, I’ve been a copywriter for the past 10 years. Tens of thousands of people have gone to seminars because of the words I’ve written. So frankly, I know a thing or two about this subject… might pay to listen up.

Understand this: It doesn’t matter what kind of seminar you are running; from an Intro Night workshop to new prospects to a multi-day event to your own Tribe; your seminar needs one BIG thing to make it a success.

It needs a BIG Idea!

Every seminar needs a great theme to capture the attention and interest of the intended market. It’s got to be exciting! Dramatic.

The BIG idea can also be your bonuses or prizes. Cars and Holidays are popular; however the main thing is to match the prize to the market.

There are too many same old, same old seminars at the moment. There is no clear cut distinction between them; no compelling reason to choose one over another. Even worse, there are no REAL, exciting personalities behind these events. Everyone is so damn politically correct it makes me cringe. They’re so nice they are BORING.

Don’t you be one of them! If you want a profitable seminar, come up with a BIG Idea, backed up with a BIG Bribe, and infuse your promotion with personality.

That’s how you put bums on seats. That’s how you ensure your next event is a sell out!

Here are some questions we had in the first 12 hours today:

Q. “I was wondering, my partner and I, like you and Greg, split the responsibilities of the business. She with the speaking and selling, I with the logistics and event management. Is it possible for us to kind of split the membership into the relevant content for each of us? I would not take away as much from speaker training content as my partner would and she not as much from business structure as I would. Hope to hear from you soon.”

A. The classes in the mentoring program divided into modules. You can get into the management part of it and your partner might be interested in Marketing, however you both might want to join webinars. There’s more than enough useful information for the two of you to get your teeth into.

Q. Please let me know when the live aspects of the various training opportunities are scheduled.

A. The “Blueprint in Action” webinar series will start in the second week of August. It will be held Tuesday and Thursdays for 4 weeks. (8 trainings in total). The “Sales Letters That Put Bums in Seats” TeleTraining with Pete Godfrey will be the first week of August- looking like the Wednesday. I have to wait to hear time from Pete. All these live trainings will be recorded and available for you if (a) you miss them or (b) you want to review them. What time zone are you in?

(the times will be 8pm in Sydney; 11am in London for most of our calls and trainings)

Q. I am not presently speaking. I am doing one-on-one coaching / healing low key at home at present. Have a number of programmes I have designed but not implented as such, a half written book / internet resource and ….. I have not long come out of a marriage with kids, car and no money! Know I will be on the international stage one day. Know my material is good. Pretty much focussed at present on body / mind connection – LOVE principles. Guess what I am asking is even if I haven’t got the resources 100% completed as yet and with no money, is there a way to get started and get some momentum?

A. Absolutely! The program has been designed to help people go from a few random projects and getting their “Elegant Business Model” together. Plus working toward a presentation that will get you more clients. It’s probably actually better if you don’t have them completed because then you can finish them in the best way to support your over all business. We have one member in Perth, Australia who has a 6 month old baby and is working through the resources in her own time around family commitments. Angie is loving the power calls coz it means she gets all her business support without actually having to leave home! Does that help?

Q.  I am a GP and Naturopath in Melbourne who does some public speaking. I have written a book “How To Live To 100 and Love It!” and produced 3 therapeutic CDs – sleep, relaxation and study skills. Sales after a talk are minimal. My concern is that to give a “no brainer” offer to audience members at Rotary or Probus that I need some high priced items to offer as bonuses. Consultations here get a Medicare rebate for 50% of the cost. The book is self published and sold for $30.00. Each CD is $20.00. What can I offer at a high price to help the offer? Sales people for marketing, business can put a value of $1500 on their consultations. I don’t believe I can.

A. Hi! Great question. Your bonus doesn’t need to be that high priced- it’s more about overwhleming people with value. The question to ask is what do your target audience really want. We could brainstorm this in one of your power calls when you join the program. There’s a technique in eclass 3 called the Magic Wand techniqe which will help you cme up with bonuses. And webinar 6 in the Blueprint in action series is going to help loads too.

Q. How esle can I sell my book and CDs. Currently I give the book away free to new clients.

A. there are loads of ways we can sell the books and cds. it would need to fit in with the overall strategy of where your business is heading. Best for you is to talk with Joanna through in a power call. The main thing to do first is build your list of subscribers… then the strategies are easy!

Q. How is Joey going to be teaching us?  Is there hands on from her or is it all email and teleseminars?

A. You’re lucky-  Joanna is hosting the “Blueprint in Action” webinar series live with the new Silver Mentoring Program members.  You will have the opportunity to ask Joanna specific and targetted questions during that sereis.

The Pareto Principle is always at play when it comes to your speaking career.

Of the starry-eyed masses who choose to follow a career that involves speaking,  the truth is 20% of them will make 80% of the money.

Which means the other 80% struggle, sharing the remaining 20% of income among them.

Of the 20% who succeed financially, 20% of these will have 80% of the lifestyle rewards.  That is, 80% of financially successful speakers are too busy to enjoy their rewards.  They may enjoy occasional holidays to ritzy destinations- sandwiched between relentless speaking engagements.

How do I know?  I just described my “old speaking career”.  My “new speaking career” is far more elegant.

One of the traps that many speakers fall into is thinking in terms of getting “Paid per speech”.  But this turns you into nothing other than a highly paid labourer.  But even learning to sell from stage is not going to enhance your public speaking career unless you have an Elegant Business Model.

One of the keys to making your speaking career one of freedom and lifestyle is to break the link between time and money using membership sites; or perhaps a better term is “subscriptions”.

ENHANCE YOUR PUBLIC SPEAKING CAREER WITH MEMBERSHIP SITES

The reason I don’t like the term membership site so much is because there are 6 ways to create “recurring monthly income” without having to build a highly technical “membership site”. 

For many people-oriented speakers, the thought of having to build some software-dependent animal like this is too much to bear!  So the good news is there are many ways to create recurring streams of highly leveraged income from your speaking career, and you can choose how complex you want them to be.

Career-enhancing subscription models for speakers include:

1.    EMAIL MODEL MEMBERSHIPS:  This is where your clients receive a regular email from you with a text-based lesson in it.  There are two versions of this:

1. Simple level:  A simple email full of valuable tips in your inbox.
2. Advanced level: A text email with a link to a website such as my newsletter “Behind the Scenes”.

The key to both is to write some simple, but valuable information and send it out by email.

2.    PDF MEMBERSHIPS:  This is where you send out a pdf regularly jampacked full of value.   This can be emailed or posted.

1. Email: One that I subscribe to which I really enjoy getting is Armand Morin’s “Internet Marketing Newsletter”.  He makes it look like a magazine, full of images and so on- so it is visually very appealing. 
2. Post: My copywriting friend, Pete Godfrey (who by the way I have asked to write an article on filling rooms for you for next week’s newsletter) has a great 12 page monthly newsletter he sends out in the mail.

3.    AUDIO MEMEBERSHIPS:  This model is where you send out a regular audio to your members.  It could be in the form of:

1. An audio postcard where they go to a website to listen to your pre-recorded audio;
2. A regular TeleSeminar where they can join in and learn and participate regularly.

4.    A VIDEO MEMBERSHIP: In this case it is a regular video piece.  Again this may be:

1. A video postcard  or
2. A regular live TV show using ustream.com
3. A regular webinar where you use video and visual aids to teach your information.  We have just started using GoToWebinar for our Million Dollar Masterclass webinars and we’re very impressed.

5.    A SERVICE MEMBERSHIP:  In this model your client is paying you for regular service from them.  Our Secret Weapon Software comes with this component as a subscription.  Vanessa offers monthly support and training for a nominal monthly fee.

6.    A COMPLETE MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM: This may involve elements of all the others and more.  Our own Silver Mentoring Program (which, by the way we are launching on July 22nd and opening the doors on a killer offer for only 7 days is an example of this.  It includes:

1. Email and text lessons taking you through how to profit in your speaking career.
2. Regular TeleSeminars where I interview speaking and marketing experts.
3. Services such as critiques of your presentation and powerpoints.
4. Community through the blog.
5. Video training to show you speaking tips through the classes
6. Special members benefits such as opportunities to speak at events.

But the point of all this is that most people put off leveraging their speaking career through creating their own membership program because they think it has to be the huge whizz-bang bells and whistles version.  But you can get started with something really simple for a low monthly fee and start creating your regular monthly income today.

The keys to remember are:

• Create valuable content for your subscribers
• Provide it at a no-brainer price
• Automate and systemise it through wise software choices

But the most important thing is to get started.  Don’t try to have it perfect to begin.  Let me know how you go!
